An integrated smart toilet asks for less cleaning than an ordinary one, not more. The bowl is rimless, so there is no hidden channel to scrub, and the washing nozzle cleans itself before and after every use. Your job is a light, regular wipe and a little hard-water care, while avoiding the few things that can harm the electronics and surfaces. Here is the simple routine that keeps one running beautifully for years.
Why it needs less work
Two features do most of the heavy lifting. The rimless bowl has no concealed rim channel where residue and limescale usually build up out of sight, so water rinses the whole surface with each flush and there is far less to scrub. The self-cleaning nozzle retracts and rinses itself automatically, so the part that matters most is maintained without you lifting a finger. Between them, the unit stays cleaner on its own than a conventional toilet ever does.
The daily and weekly wipe
For day-to-day care, a soft damp cloth is all you need. Wipe the seat, the lid and the side control panel with warm water and, if you like, a little mild soap, then dry with a soft cloth. Once a week, give the bowl a clean with a gentle, non-abrasive toilet cleaner and a soft brush. That is genuinely the bulk of it.
What to avoid
This matters more than the cleaning itself. Do not use abrasive scourers, scouring powders or anything that can scratch the ceramic or the seat. Keep bleach and harsh chemicals away from the seat, the lid and the electronics, including thick bleach left to sit in the bowl, as fumes and splashes can damage components and discolour the plastic. Never spray cleaner directly at the control panel or any electrical part; spray onto the cloth instead. Avoid solvents, alcohol wipes and antibacterial sprays on the seat surface. In short, gentle and damp, never harsh and abrasive.
Running the nozzle self-clean cycle
Although the nozzle rinses itself with normal use, most units offer a dedicated self-clean function you can trigger from the panel or remote. Running it every week or two keeps the nozzle in good order. On models where the nozzle tip is removable, an occasional gentle wipe with a soft cloth is all it needs.
Descaling and hard-water care
If you live in a hard-water area, limescale is the main thing to stay ahead of. Wipe down surfaces regularly so deposits never get a foothold, and descale the bowl periodically with a cleaner suited to ceramic, following the maker's guidance rather than reaching for anything aggressive. Many units include or support a descaling routine for the internal water path; run it as advised. Staying ahead of scale is far easier than removing it once it has set.
The deodoriser
The deodoriser draws air through a filter to neutralise odour at source. It largely looks after itself, but the filter benefits from occasional attention; check your model's guidance for whether it should be cleaned or replaced, and roughly how often. A cared-for filter keeps the unit working as quietly and effectively as it did on day one.
Long-term care and the warranty
Treated gently, a smart toilet stays excellent for a very long time. Keep up the light routine, avoid the harsh chemicals, stay ahead of limescale, and the unit will reward you. It also helps to know what is covered: our cover includes a lifetime ceramic warranty alongside a two-year guarantee on the working parts, and you can read the detail on our warranty page. For a refresher on what each component does, see smart toilet features explained, and if you are still at the fitting stage, our installation guide covers setting one up properly.
